Václav Gollár High School of Art

Studying at one of the Czech Republic's creative universities is always a guarantee of a top-class European art education. However, becoming a student of an art university is not always as easy as it may seem at first glance.

Unlike most economic, technical or humanitarian areas, the list of creative specialties taught in higher education institutions of the Czech Republic, is not so large. In addition, the selection of future students is often carried out only by reviewing their earlier works, which can not always be considered an objective assessment.

For this reason, applicants wishing to study at creative universities need to familiarize themselves as thoroughly as possible with all the options available for obtaining a diploma in the arts and crafts. Václav Gollár was an outstanding Czech draftsman and lithographer of the 17th century. The world-famous Association of Czech Graphic Artists and one of the largest and most prestigious art schools in the Czech Republic are named after him.

The Gollár School of Graphic Arts was founded in 1920. The State Vocational School of Graphic Arts was divided into two institutions in 1949: the Higher Vocational School of Graphic Arts and the Secondary Industrial School of Graphic Arts in Prague. The Václav Gollár Art School was established on the basis of the Secondary Industrial School.

Training is conducted in three areas after secondary school education, specializing in consumer product design, book graphics, and the creation of promos and advertisements. A new graduate program, Ceramics and Porcelain Artistry, opened in 1999. From the very beginning, it was taught only by the best masters of the time: painter Rudolf Kremlicka, illustrator Jan Konupek, designer Ladislav Sutnar. It was thanks to them and their invaluable contribution to the work that the university soon gained international recognition and reached a completely different level of training for graphic artists.

The bar set almost 100 years ago is still set at the same height and is not inferior to any other creative studio in the world.

At the moment the Václav Gollár Higher School of Art is one of 26 state universities in the Czech Republic, which accepts applicants for 2 main programs - "Interactive Graphics" and "Drawing and Illustration in Media".

Both programs last for 3 years and at the end of it graduates receive the title of Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Interactive Graphics

The specialty of Interactive Graphics was introduced at the university in 2004 and immediately became one of the most popular among both Czech and foreign applicants. The course "Interactive Graphics" prepares students for work in areas related to applied and animation graphics, students learn to operate 2D and 3D animation programs. Every year students have the opportunity to present their animated films at the Aero cinema, take part in master classes at the Anifest Teplice and Anifilm Třebo animation film festivals.

In turn, the higher vocational school also includes two courses:

2D and 3D animation filmmaking;
video installations;
TV screensavers;
augmented reality.

The list of compulsory subjects includes classes in Macromedia Flash, Maxon Cinema 4D, Adobe programs.

Special attention is also paid to:

the study of art history;
typography;
preparatory drawing;
computer graphics;
fonts;
foreign languages (English, German).

Each semester ends with the defense of coursework, and the whole study ends with a final exam, which consists of an English language exam, a theoretical exam in professional subjects (art history, computer graphics, interactivity control) and a diploma paper related to the defense.

An important part of the program is also the students' professional practice, organized by the school with the participation of Charles University and the large advertising agency Creativconection.

Drawing and Illustration in Media

The first intake of applicants for the specialty of Drawing and Illustration in Media was opened in 2008. It is a three-year full-time program that ends with a final exam. The course prepares students to work in areas related to freehand and applied graphics, students learn to manage 2D programs.

The program of this course allows students to thoroughly:

explore the history and practice of the art of illustration;
familiarize themselves with the techniques of illustration;
develop ideological thinking;
form their own artistic handwriting;
master a wide range of creative skills.

During the classes students learn to create newspaper layouts, magazine covers, select fonts, do layout, study various methods of image and plot construction.

In the process of training, of course, the basic graphic programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign are also studied.

Studying at the university is completed with the presentation of author's projects and passing final exams on specialized subjects.

Upon graduation, students become professional animation film directors and artists, illustrators, web designers, computer graphic artists, in demand in print and electronic media, television and film studios.

Entry requirements

To become a student of the Václav Gollár High School of Art, you have to pass a creative competition. It usually consists of 3 stages:

Portfolio evaluation
Practical creative examination
Passing an oral interview

The portfolio should consist of 10-15 works (animation, graphic design, interior photos).

Creative Practical Examination:

head drawing
story drawing (comic book)
general cultural knowledge test
logo creation.

You can apply to study at the Václav Hollar Art School until the end of May or apply in person at the school.

The open days are March 15 and May 17.

In addition, foreign students together with the "invitation card" will need to provide the admission committee with a certificate of Czech language proficiency at the B2 level and a nostrified secondary school certificate.

The university accepts documents until May 30. The exams are usually held in early June.

The maximum number of points that can be obtained in the entrance examinations is 295.
The minimum passing score is 130.

A total of 12 students are enrolled in the specialties "Interactive Graphics" and "Drawing and Illustration in Mass Media". Despite the fact that the Václav Gollár Higher School of Art is a public university, tuition is paid.
