VFU was founded on December 12, 1918 and is a university of natural sciences, which trains specialists in the field of veterinary medicine and pharmacy. It is the only university in the Czech Republic that offers a training program in veterinary medicine and one of several (along with Charles University) in pharmacy. The Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University offers applicants education at three faculties in areas that cover various areas related to medical care, hygiene, ecology and pharmacy. Graduates work in the field of healthcare, control bodies in the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, etc.
The task of the university is to train personnel for animal care organizations, veterinary clinics, supervision and control bodies, as well as for pharmaceutical industry enterprises and other similar areas. The Faculty provides comprehensive education in the field of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of infectious and non-communicable animal diseases, as well as basic knowledge in the field of food hygiene of animal origin. The term of study is six years. Successful graduates of FVL are awarded the title of "Doctor of Veterinary Medicine" (MuDR.).
The training of individual disciplines is adapted to the curricula in force in the countries of the European Union (EU), so after graduation you will be able to work in any country in Europe. The University is also a member of the European Association of Veterinary Education Institutions (EAEVE).
For those interested in a doctoral program, FVL offers three-year full-time or combined training in selected 13 areas of veterinary medicine. At the end of their studies, students are expected to take state exams and defend their dissertation. Successful graduates of the doctoral program are awarded the title of "Doctor" (Ph.D.).

As part of the curriculum, students study the following disciplines: biology and chemistry, groups of subjects on animal husbandry (animal nutrition, animal science, animal hygiene, animal protection), groups of clinical subjects (anatomy, physiology, microbiology, parasitology, genetics, pharmacology). Mandatory items are: diseases of dogs, cats, horses, bees, exotic animal species, etc.
The training includes the whole range of disciplines of veterinary medicine, the emphasis is on the diagnosis, therapy and prevention of diseases of various groups of animals.
Graduates receive the title of "Doctor of Veterinary Medicine" (MVDr.)
Often, graduates of the faculty find application of their knowledge in private veterinary practice. The demand for veterinary services in the Czech Republic is consistently high. Employment is also possible in public clinics.
The faculty has implemented a doctoral program in 14 areas of veterinary medicine in Czech, 5 in English. The duration of training is 4 years. At the end of the program, graduates are awarded the degree of Doctor (abbreviated Ph.D.).
The first school for cattle therapy appeared in France in the eighteenth century. It was founded by Louis the fifteenth, concerned about the high mortality rate among domestic animals.
Fakulta veterinární hygiene a ekologie provides universal education in the field of veterinary hygiene and food quality control. The faculty was established on July 4, 1990 simultaneously with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
This faculty was created with the aim of training specialists in the field of veterinary hygiene and ecology, animal protection and welfare, food safety and quality, as well as veterinary aspects of gastronomy. From a national and international point of view, the faculty has an excellent position. It is one of the two faculties providing veterinary education in the Czech Republic, which is an outstanding institution in the Czech and international higher education system.
Undergraduate studies are possible in Czech (free of charge) and English (for a fee) languages, in the field of animal protection and welfare, and more recently also in the field of food safety in gastronomy. The standard training period is 3 years. The study ends with a state final exam, and graduates are awarded the title of "bachelor".
After receiving a bachelor's degree, you can also get an education in a two-year master's program. The study ends with the state final exam and the defense of the thesis, and graduates are awarded the title of "master".

Specialization is focused on hygiene and technology of food production, laboratory tests, legal norms and supervision of the production of animal and vegetable products. Training in the specialty "Protection and welfare of animals" includes the study of conditions of detention, health and protection of animals.
Since the Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University in Brno is the only university in the Czech Republic that produces specialists in the protection and care of animals, it is quite difficult to compare it with any other Czech higher educational institution. Therefore, the university itself is accustomed to focus not on internal, but on external standards of education.
So, in 2017, the Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University in Brno once again confirmed the high quality of teaching, which fully complies with the standards of the European Association of Veterinary Medicine Institutions (EAEVE) and the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE).
The future specialization includes the whole range of disciplines of veterinary medicine. Graduates find application of their knowledge in veterinary control and supervision over the production of animal products, in laboratories and food industry companies.

Admission and study conditions at VFU
Undergraduate and graduate applicants submit "invitations" until the end of February, and entrance exams are usually held in June. For admission, it is necessary to pass entrance exams in biology and chemistry, for admission to pharmacy — additionally physics.
Foreign applicants for enrollment are required to provide a nostrification of a certificate or diploma of education received outside the Czech Republic. A prerequisite is knowledge of the Czech language at the B2-C1 level and proficiency in specialized terminology in Czech. You can prepare for admission by choosing a specialized preparatory course in Brno or Prague.
Education at the university is organized according to the principle of the credit system (ECTS – European Credit Transfer System). Forms of classes: lectures, seminars, practical lessons, laboratory studies, practical classes in clinics, grocery shops, enterprises.
Upon completion of the curriculum, graduates are awarded a scientific title and a diploma in several foreign languages, which facilitates the procedure for recognizing education and employment abroad.
The university has a program to support talented students. Scholarships are awarded for scientific achievements, creative achievements, results in sports. There is a scholarship program for social and housing needs, as well as a standard scholarship for doctoral students.
Foreign and nonresident students are provided with places in the university dormitory. The university has its own student residence (Kaunicovy studentské koleje), which is located near the academic campus. Additionally, the university uses dormitories of other universities in Brno.
